Earthy Tones Staying Around

For the last last several years, white paints and greys have been taking over interior design. But for 2020, popular paint colors are shifting towards warmer off-whites. Using earth coloured materials, elements or a true white ceiling will create contrast and brings out the warmer tones of the off-white walls.

Max Wilker, style director at Better Homes and Gardens told Inman that he expects the “back to nature” trend to continue, saying it’s comforting and easy to work with.
 

Black

Wilker expressed astonishment that black continues to trend, but he likes black because it can used effectively to create a beautiful space. 
 

Bar-like Kitchen Islands

Everyone enjoys kitchen islands with an open design so people can talk to each other versus kitchen islands where it functions only as a counter for meal preparation.
 

Comfort   Hygge became a thing a couple of years ago and some of the principles from that style movement have continued to resonate, chief among them — coziness and comfort. That mean more inviting furniture for lounging and furniture made of natural materials. Think of a big blue plush couch and hardwood floors.

Minimalism With a Personal Touch

Minimalism is expected to continue to trend into 2020, but it’s a minimalism with a flair of personality that will thrive. The personal touch can be seen in homes when they display things that hold special meaning in their life or in projection of ideology like sustainability. As people grow more concerned about the environment, they have turned toward feasible interior design. In short this could mean more use of bamboo, furniture made from recycled materials and repurposed items. Pairing multiple designs and finishes of furniture can create a sophisticated feel in a living room, great room, or sitting room – even if you aren’t splurging on ultra expensive furniture.
 

Integrated Living Spaces   Open-concept homes remain a lightning rod for interior design with strong opinions on either side. But some people love them because they allow for more socialization and the kitchen is often the center of activity in the house. Expect the trend to remain into 2020.

Geometric Backsplashing and Tiles

When it comes to kitchen backsplash designs, there’s tons of options available – everything from subway tile, to mosaics, to stacked stone, and so many more! William Cullum, a senior designer at Thomas Jayne, is all-in on mosaics. "I think that after touching a slick iPhone, people are craving the texture, patina and age of something that feels firm and permanent," he says.

The geometric shapes trend is not limited to kitchens. It’s also popular for bathrooms, rugs, framed artwork, and even wallpapers. Spanish- and Portuguese-inspired tile is making a major statement in kitchens and baths sometimes to that extent that professional designers and renovating home owners travel through these countries to gather raw material for their interior.
