Paws Welcome: Renting with Pets in Budapest Your go-to guide for finding a pet-friendly home in the Hungarian capital. Moving to Budapest with your dog, cat—or maybe a rabbit? You're not alone. Expats are bringing their four-legged family members with them, and the city's rental market is gradually becoming more pet-friendly. But there are a few things you should know before your dog starts barking Hungarian
What "Pet-Friendly" Really Means in Budapest
Not all “pet-friendly” listings are the same — some only allow small pets or specific breeds. Landlords may set limits on the number of pets, their size, or even require prior approval.
Ensure all pet agreements (including deposits or rules) are clearly written into the lease. Clear communication protects you — and keeps your furry friend happily settled.
Best Areas in Budapest for Pet Owners
Districts near Városliget, Normafa, and Margaret Island are ideal for daily walks and outdoor fun.
Buda hills (Districts II and XII) offer houses with gardens and easy access to nature trails.
Apartments can work well too—just look for locations close to parks or green areas.
At-Home Budapest agents are here to help you find the perfect pet-friendly home that fits your lifestyle.
Budapest Pet Culture 101
Most locals love dogs, but some apartment buildings may have pet restrictions—always check the rules.
Pets are allowed on public transport (trams, buses, metro), but dogs must wear a muzzle and be leashed.
Budapest has many pet shops and veterinary clinics where English is spoken, especially in central and expat-friendly districts.
There are several active dog owner groups on social media to help you connect with the local pet community.
Outdoor cafés and parks often welcome pets, adding to the city’s relaxed, pet-loving vibe.
How to Convince a Landlord to Say “Yes” to Your Pet
Create a short “pet bio” with photos, breed details, and a few lines about your pet’s personality and behavior.
Offer a pet deposit to show you’re responsible and prepared.
Arrange a meet-and-greet between your pet and the landlord if they’re unsure.
Provide a reference from a previous landlord confirming your pet was well-behaved.
At-Home Budapest agents can support you in presenting your pet positively and finding open-minded landlords.

Dear Clients and Associates,
At Home Budapest decided to make the responsible choice and restrict it's operation during the outbreak of COVID-19.
We are convinced that it is a choice that benefits everyone's health and will help us get through these difficult times sooner.
In the meantime, many of our services are still available. For those who are interested, give us a call on +36 20 262 7864.
Regarding the property visits in this period, our company offers three different options:
During the visit, the owner and the realtor stay outside while the inquiring party views the property (wearing a mask, rubber gloves, and of course, not touching anything). After the tour, the realtor and the owner answer any emerging questions, all while strictly keeping a 2 meter distance.
We set up an appointment for the property visit, in which the realtor is not physically present - instead, they join the rendezvous via facetime or videochat. The visit itself goes by the same routine as in option 1: the inquiring parties enter alone, all while keeping themselves to the necessary precautions.
The inquiring party is not physically present, instead, our realtor gives a virtual tour via facetime or videochat.
We will do our best to stay healthy and stay safe so we can bounce back to normal as soon as possible - so should you! Wash your hands regularly, disinfect everything, and most importantly, #stayhome!
